Class (AR) Restricted License Course

About the Class A Restricted (AR) License

The Class A/R license is meant for drivers looking to operate/tow smaller truck-trailer combinations (e.g. a pick-up truck pulling a recreational, landscaping, horse, or utility trailer). In 2008, Ontario acknowledged that many RVs, horse trailer haulers, and other vehicles were towing trailers exceeding the 4,600 kg weight limit, which required a Class A license to remain compliant.

However, some Ontario License Offices were unable to administer road tests with these smaller combinations and insisted on using a tractor-trailer setup, which was often impractical. As a result, Ontario introduced the Restricted A license. This license allows individuals to take the road test using their own equipment, enabling them to tow vehicles over 4,600 kg.

This course is designed to prepare you to meet Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards, ensuring you are ready for both the road test and the responsibilities of handling restricted Class A vehicles safely and confidently.

What You Can & Can't Drive with an AR License?

You CAN Drive:

  • Tractor-trailers where the trailer has a gross weight of 4,600 kg or less.

  • Straight trucks with air brakes.

  • Towed trailers up to 4,600 kg.

  •  AR covers all D class vehicles if you complete airbrakes(Z).

You CAN'T Drive:

  • Full-size tractor-trailers with trailers over 4,600 kg.

  • Double trailers (A-train, B-train, etc.).

  • Vehicles carrying dangerous goods requiring special endorsements.

  • Full Class A combinations.
